Ambitious Diva Company has been a provider of Google Adwords and search engine marketing solutions for over two years. We’ve managed our own paid advertising campaigns, managed campaigns for major brands and consulted others to do it themselves. Still, we meet folks who are afraid of the ad spend and AdWords because they don’t understand it fully, or how it can help their business.

To keep it simple AdWords is Google’s paid advertising service, and you can bid a dollar amount to say, “Google I’ll give you X dollars to show my ad when a user types in this specific set of keywords related to my brand.” Which keywords, how much to bid, what type of ad–contextual or a rich-media display ad, and where to target placement for these ads is up to an endless amount of factors that you and your certified Google Partner can decide.

The point of all this is to get a jump ahead in the line of search results, much like paying the cashier in a grocery store to push you ahead of all others so you don’t have to wait your turn. Organically, your website may be on the 15th page of Google for a certain sets of keywords that you use to advertise your brand or that a person types in to find a business like yours. Search engine optimization tactics can promote you higher up the search engine results pages (SERP) but they still require time and effort to get desired results. Search engine marketing and Google Adwords, however, allow you to pay to play, pushing you into the highly visible sponsored advertising spots on the top and right hand side of Google search results.

Other perks of AdWords or being on the Google Display Network is the ability to place image and media heavy advertisements on partner sites and even in YouTube. Remarketing, meaning an ad that basically chases you around the web, is another bonus (for marketers, not necessarily an annoyed consumer who is try to resist purchasing designer pumps from Nordstrom). More recently, we are seeing ads within the network showing within Gmail, mimicking the aesthetic of an email in your inbox.
